Twitter Takes Teen from Zero to Villain to Hero in 5 Hours

One young Scottish web developer wanting to learn about Twitter development ended up learning some harsh lessons about Twitter users…

…your Twitter account led to speculation from some that the app may be a scam that would at a later date send out spam tweets from your account.
According to the developer, the truth is much more mundane. Reading through his tweets, it appears that 17 year-old James Cunningham had developed the app to learn how oAuth worked. Little did he know that while his back was turned his app would become a controversial viral hit.
On discovering the sudden popularity of Twifficiency, his elation quickly faded and he began explaining himself:…

5 Things Serious Tech People Need To Stop Tweeting

Twitter was built, populated, and promoted by the tech community. That just makes it even more ironic that so many of us techies have terrible Twitter manners.

…Twitter was built, populated, and promoted by the tech community. That just makes it even more ironic that so many of us techies have terrible Twitter manners. We should know better.
Look technology friends, Twitter is a lovely thing, but when we tweet certain things we make our followers cringe and twitch towards the unfollow button. Do whatever you will, but after reading literally millions of tweets I think that if we cut out the following Tweets we would all be better off.
And of course, I am just as guilty as you are.
Tweeting Every Damn Place You Go
You may think that it is interesting that you are at Whole Foods (because you have the spare coin, right?), but we don’t. The annoying thing is that many ‘must follow’ people in tech are some of the worst Foursquare-on-Twitter abusers.
I may have to follow you, but I hate your Foursquare spam. Tell me when you are at the White House, or the Playboy Mansion, not the carwash.
Vague Victory Tweets
Your Epic win today, really stoked about the next three months…

Twitter Adds ‘You Both Follow’ Feature

According to a Tweet just posted by Twitter engineer Nick Kallen, the microblogging network has just enabled a new “You both follow” feature. When you click on a contact it will show you the common people you both follow on the right sidebar of the page, just above the “following” tab.

…According to a Tweet just posted by Twitter engineer Nick Kallen, the microblogging network has just enabled a new You both follow feature. The feature, which is only being tested for 10 percent of users, allows you to see any common people that you and another user both follow. Here’s a screenshot of what the feature looks like.
The You both follow feature is pretty much what it sounds like. When you click on a contact it will show you the common people you both follow on the right sidebar of the page, just above the following tab. It’s actually surprising the feature hasn’t been turned on sooner, considering how useful it is in showing your social connections between other Twitter users.
You both follow is similar in theory to Facebook’s friends in common feature, which has been around for some time now. The feature no doubt makes Twitter a little more of an interconnected social network and it should be interesting if the microblogging network takes it a step further. For example, Twitter could start…

Why Location Apps Are The Next Big Thing

Location services – small, mobile apps that allow people to share with friends where they are, what they’re doing and what’s cool there – are, much like Twitter, easily dismissed but actually a pretty huge deal. Not only do they represent the “next big thing” in tech, they are also part of how our culture is changing.

…using the web makes it much easier to find out what’s going on, which makes you more likely to get out and do things.
These new location apps Foursquare in particular take things a step further by injecting a playful competitive edge. Visit a place more than any other user and you become ‘mayor’ of that establishment.
By mixing mobile technology and a high-score mentality from gaming, these services encourage people to go and explore their cities, becoming the first person to check-in somewhere or just the guy or gal who checks in most.
This competitive edge appeals to many, and is another reason more and more people will use these apps.

They Help You Focus On Your Interests

When the first social networks like Friendster appeared, they were general purpose, aiming to be all things to all people. Later though, things started to get more specific, and you’d get social networks for book-lovers or pet owners or any number of things.
Similarly, we are now seeing the rise of location-based apps like…
