Rebutting skeptic arguments in a single tweet

Now, when you look at the list of skeptic arguments, you’ll see a Twitter button beside each argument. These take you to Twitter and prepopulate the “What’s happening?” form with the one-liner along with a short URL link.

…surface directly observed increased greenhouse effect http://is.gd/dDRio Of course, it should go without saying that a short tweet is hardly the final word in a climate discussion. On the contrary, it’s just the first step - an opportunity to point people towards more resources, evidence and peer-reviewed research. My short answer hopefully explained that the basis for man-made global warming is scientific evidence and direct observations. Then I provided a link to the empirical evidence for the increased greenhouse effect. So many thanks to Kieren Diment for making all this possible. Thanks also to Nigel Leck who first suggested I pare the one-liners down to less than 100 characters, paving the way. Nigel also suggested other ways to trim the one-liners into lean and mean tweets, with word substitutions like “because” to “b/c” (chill out, George Orwell, it’s the future). It’s taken a while but I’m finally starting to get the hang of all this new-fangled technology and another tool is added to Skeptical…

Best Tweet Gets a Job: One Ad Exec’s Crazy Hiring Plan

The writer behind the funniest one-liner on Twitter gets a $70,000 job with a top-tier firm in Los Angeles.

…”It’s really hard to find good writers. I don’t know why,” McKay told me. “It’s even harder to find people to write dialogue. It’s even harder to find funny writers.”And funny, viral writers like the geniuses who scripted the Old Spice man’s recent viral videos? Forget about it. “It’s much easier to write long form,” McKay said. “It’s much harder to get someone interested in something in 140 characters.”
This won’t be the first time a tweet landed someone a job. It’s not even quite unprecedented at Saatchi. The London office encouraged would-be interns to compete in a Facebook group challenge in which they battled to get the most members. But one tweet for a coveted advertising writing job? That’s nuts even by Saatchi standards.

“I was like, ‘Fuck it, I’m going to try it,’” McKay explained. “Immediately I get HR coming up and saying, ‘What did you just do?’”
As it turns out, most of the good replies have come from people within the advertising industry. They have “books,” portfolios of work from other…

Samsung offering Galaxy S phones to frustrated iPhone users

It appears that technology giant Samsung is handing out free Galaxy S smartphones to iPhone 4 owners frustrated by reception problems. An account on Twitter called @samsungukmobile is contacting people who’ve tweeted about their difficulties with the handset, asking them to submit their contact details to receive a free handset.

…Too good to be true? I decided to investigate.
“I called a friend at Samsung, and though she was initially sceptical, it has now been confirmed: the campaign is legit. Samsung is so confident about the superiority of the Galaxy S that they re sending free ones to existing iPhone customers so they can decide for themselves.”
It’s an interesting and unconventional approach to marketing the device, which is powered by Android 2.1 and features a whopping great big 4.0-inch AMOLED display. It’s entirely possible that Samsung has taken a gamble that getting a few of the devices out in the wild, so that people can see and play with them, will be worth the initial outlay in terms of the effect they’ll have on sales.
Tiffany added: “I ve been waiting for an excuse to try out an Android for months, but it is yet to be seen if I can be persuaded to stray.” Would you convert to Android if the phone was offered up free? Tell us in the comments.
Update: We’ve got official word from Samsung that this is legitimate. A…

Twitter: We’ll Stop Breaking Soon, We Swear

] Twitter wants you to forget the fail whale.

…coletivomambembe/flickr Twitter wants you to forget the fail whale. The service has struggled to deal with its rapid growth and the problems that arise as a result, but the company hopes that a new data center and some innovative back-end solutions will help hasten updates and reduce downtime. In a post yesterday, Twitter engineer Jean-Paul Cozzatti explained that a database request locked up the service on Monday, leaving many users unable to sign in or sign up for Twitter. The problem was the latest issue for the rapidly growing service, the maintenance of which is like “building a rocket in mid-flight,” Cozzatti wrote.Building that rocket should become a little easier soon, though. In a separate post yesterday, the company announced that it would be moving into its first custom data center in Utah and plans to open more over the next two years. “Having our own data center will give us the flexibility to more quickly
make adjustments as our infrastructure needs change,” Cozzatti wrote. And, last week,…
