Mainstream & Social Media Pushing Tumblr to a Tipping Point

With over 1.5 billion page views in July, Tumblr has emerged as a relevant player in social media.

…Therein lies the key to its appeal. Switched called it a blogging platform, Sitepoint compared it Twitter, and NetworkWorld compared it to Facebook.
Many use Tumblr as a simple alternative to Wordpress, Blogger, or Typepad with quick blogging, reblogging, and feed integration options that allow for faster, more automated methods of running a blog.
For others, it’s a microblogging alternative to Twitter, allowing for quick sharing of thoughts without the absolute constraint of 140-characters. Unlike Twitter, videos and images can be posted directly to the stream rather than simply linked.
Other people use it as a community site similar to Vox and Ning. While the community aspect is less robust with “membership” happening simply by “following” a site, the communities are still extremely active and engaged with one another.
Perhaps the biggest differentiator between Tumblr and other social sites is the reblogging tool. Similar to Facebook, one can take content that they find on one Tumblelog and instantly…

The Twitter Phenomenon: Why Bother?

Many of those who use Twitter, whether for business, pleasure, or both, would testify in a court of law that it is one of the most useful tools of the 21st century. It connects them in ways they never could before.

…Twitter may interest you in the arena of professional growth. No matter what your profession is, there are people out there in the Twitterspace like you. Twitter also has lists of people in various professions, clubs, and organizations. This makes it an excellent way to network with like-minded people.

For example, as a writer, I use Twitter to find out the latest tech trends, news about new gadgets, sites, and software, and to communicate with other people in this industry. As a librarian, I also communicate with other librarians from all over the world.
Networking on a Twitter is not quite as easy as adding friends you already know. It takes work, and you are bound to get numerous people trying to follow you who only want to advertise their products. Therefore, networking on Twitter requires follower management, but it can still be rewarding, with a little work.
Marketing
If you are marketing for a well-known celebrity, corporation, or organization, marketing on Twitter is very easy. Many people will…

…Twitter, the social networking site that allows users to say something in 140 characters or less, passed another milestone on Saturday with the sending of tweet number 20 billion. The Twitter message was sent at 3:44pm GMT by “GGGGGGo_Lets_Go,” a graphic designer in Tokyo who works at an advertising agency, according to the user profile. The message was part of a conversation that appeared to be a comment about a third party that had come online and onto Twitter. The precise meaning was difficult to translate due to lack of context, but the user’s reaction to having sent the 20 billionth Twitter message was much easier to understand.”It looks like I posted the 20 billionth tweet. …t take much to rock the boat into a double dip recession.
4:13 pm July 19, 2010 Matt wrote: I saw a few comments that fit with what I am seeing. The economy went through a major downturn and is now settling into a new normal (see PIMCO). Businesses were able to purchase just about nothing for a year, but eventually, capital expenditures are required to maintain production. We are seeing the return of expenditures as some can’t wait. The same is true for consumers. Eventually, appliances, cars, clothes etc. wear out and MUST be replaced.
What we are not seeing is optimism about the future or expansion. Consumers and the private sector will continue to deleverage. This is driven by a new fear of debt and demographics. Look for low to no growth quarters and years of high structural unemployment.

New Burger Joint Goes All-in With Social Media

Customers fill out profiles and maintain accounts with 4Food. After creating and naming a burger, they receive 25 cents in their accounts every time somebody else orders that burger. This encourages customers to market their creations by promoting them through Facebook and Twitter and other social outlets.

…These uses of mobile and social technologies already mark 4Food as a different sort of restaurant. That also means Kidron is heading down a path less traveled. “Adding technology does add a level of things that can go wrong. Most quick service restaurants are built around things that can never go wrong. We add risk by adding technology, but we also add reward,” says Kidron. That pay off comes in engaging customers and increasing brand loyalty.

4Food is already heavily involved with Twitter, long before the official opening day. Nearly 500 followers are busy chiming in with ideas on how 4Food and the people of New York can work toward “de-junking” the city. It all ties into 4Food’s mission to “de-junk fast food,” and it’s just the tip of the social media iceberg for the restaurant….
