Free Bird: No One Would Pay for Twitter, Study Shows | Techi

A study by the Center for the Digital Future at USC has done us a great service. Polling a selection of 1981 internet users, the study found that 49% use social networking sites and that 0% would be willing to pay for it.

…of users agreed or strongly agreed that they would prefer having free access to online content that has advertising accompanying it rather than having to pay for the content. Maybe if you toasted little ads into the bread, then.
You know what Twitter should do if it ever finds itself interested in a payment structure? Start charging whenever you go over 140 characters. That would be great. Or maybe it would just cause the problem of txt spk to grow ever-worse. Actually yeah, no, scratch that. Free Twitter or bust….

Quick: how many tabs do you have open right now?

…Quick: how many tabs do you have open right now? FOUR HUNDRED AND TWENTY-NINE?! You have sixty articles you wanted to read and another nine million links you wanted to check from Twitter and Facebook? Oh my. You, my friend, have a problem.
But fear not! You are not alone! It’s a problem we all have. Despite the internet’s myriad benefits when it comes to informing and entertaining us, this limitless medium also has a downside. Too. Much. Information.
Yep, from email inboxes that gush so uncontrollably it’s like they were designed by BP, to browsers flooded with things you’re ‘going to get to one day’, our experiences of the web often feel like a never-ending tidal wave of ’stuff’. This has real consequences, too. With so many different sources of information constantly lighting up around us while lists and ideas hover in the backs of our minds focus and attention can become scarce, affecting our capacity to work and get things done.
Fortunately, there are also many tools for collecting the strands of your…

Twitter: We’ll Stop Breaking Soon, We Swear

] Twitter wants you to forget the fail whale.

…coletivomambembe/flickr Twitter wants you to forget the fail whale. The service has struggled to deal with its rapid growth and the problems that arise as a result, but the company hopes that a new data center and some innovative back-end solutions will help hasten updates and reduce downtime. In a post yesterday, Twitter engineer Jean-Paul Cozzatti explained that a database request locked up the service on Monday, leaving many users unable to sign in or sign up for Twitter. The problem was the latest issue for the rapidly growing service, the maintenance of which is like “building a rocket in mid-flight,” Cozzatti wrote.Building that rocket should become a little easier soon, though. In a separate post yesterday, the company announced that it would be moving into its first custom data center in Utah and plans to open more over the next two years. “Having our own data center will give us the flexibility to more quickly
make adjustments as our infrastructure needs change,” Cozzatti wrote. And, last week,…

China No Longer Cracking Down on Porn Sites?

…BEIJING Word leaked out slowly, spread by Web-savvy folks on Twitter: Internet porn that once was blocked by Chinese government censors was now openly available.
“Are they no longer cracking down on pornographic websites? A lot of porn sites and forums are accessible,” technology blogger William Long wrote on his feed.
Messages like that startled Chinese Web surfers, long accustomed to the authorities’ Internet blockades. The country had been in the midst of highly publicized anti-pornography sweeps, and there had been no announcement of any change in government policy.
Yet eight weeks later, the porn sites are still accessible. Still unanswered are questions about whether it’s an official change in policy, a technical glitch or some sort of test by the usually disapproving Chinese Internet police.
“This has never been done with the (Chinese) Internet before,” said Beijing-based Internet analyst Zhao Jing, who goes by the English name Michael Anti.
Whatever the reason, the change has thrown into sharper…

Aliens using ‘cosmic Twitter’

Aliens may have been trying to contact us by communicating in a manner similar to Twitter, scientists have claimed.

…He and twin brother Gregory, an astrophysicist at the University of
California, Irvine, looked at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
(Seti) from the aliens’ point of view.

They concluded that Seti scientists may have been taking the wrong approach
for the past five decades.

Up to now scientists have listened out for unusual blips or bleeps from
targeted nearby stars.

Despite 50 years of searching, no-one has yet been able to come up with
evidence of an extraterrestrial signal. However, many scientists are
convinced we are not alone in the universe.

”Whatever the life form, evolution selects for economy of resources,” said
Gregory Benford. ”Broadcasting is expensive, and transmitting signals
across light years would require considerable resources.”

Writing in the journal Astrobiology, the Benfords claim that an alien
civilisation would strive to reduce costs, limit waste and make its
signalling technology efficient.

They propose that alien signals would be pulsed…
